Significant magnitude 5.1 earthquake 74 km south of Chigorodo, Colombia

5.1 quake 3 Oct 6:50 pm (GMT -5)
5.1 quake 3 Oct 6:50 pm (GMT -5)
A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported early evening near Chigorodo, Chigorodó, Antioquia, Colombia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, October 3rd, 2022, at 6:50 pm local time at a shallow depth of 16 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Murindo (pop. 2,400) located 7 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mutata (pop. 4,800) located 45 km from the epicenter, Vigia del Fuerte (pop. 4,600) 49 km away, Dabeiba (pop. 11,500) 55 km away, Chigorodo (pop. 48,400) 74 km away, Frontino (pop. 8,600) 75 km away, Carepa (pop. 20,600) 84 km away, and Apartado (pop. 86,400) 98 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
