5.6 quake 24 km east of Sullana, Piura, Peru, Oct 5, 2022 3:26 am (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred early morning on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022, at 3:26 am local time near Sullana, Provincia de Sullana, Piura, Peru, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in El Salto (pop. 210) located 6 km from the epicenter, Tambo Grande (pop. 30,000) 14 km away, Querecotillo (pop. 25,400) 20 km away, and Sullana (pop. 160,800) 24 km away.
In Marcavelica (pop. 25,600) located 26 km from the epicenter, Piura (pop. 325,500) 38 km away, San Martin (pop. 130,000) 40 km away, Chulucanas (pop. 68,800) 41 km away, and Catacaos (pop. 57,300) 48 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Pasaje, El Oro / Light shaking (MMI IV) / very short : I was asleep when I felt my bed move. The telluric movement was from one side to the other (horizontally), specifically, my bed moved perpendicularly and I woke up or stood up abruptly. It lasted approximately 6 or 7 seconds at 03:27 and was light shaking. After that I was waiting a replica and Googling recent seismic events on different web sites. Most of the dogs near my house were barking in that time frame until 3:52. | 7 users found this interesting.
