4.6 quake 4 Nov 3:29 am (GMT +3)
Just 13 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Izmir, İzmir, Turkey. The tremor was recorded early morning on Friday, November 4th, 2022, at 3:29 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 5.1, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.7, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Karabağlar (pop. 458,000) located 8 km from the epicenter, Izmir (pop. 2,500,600) 10 km away, Menderes (pop. 22,000) 12 km away, and Kemalpaşa (pop. 30,400) 20 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Torbalı (pop. 50,300) located 25 km from the epicenter, Menemen (pop. 53,500) 32 km away, Seferihisar (pop. 19,600) 36 km away, Urla (pop. 45,200) 39 km away, and Turgutlu (pop. 103,300) 46 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
