Just 12 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Santiago de Chile, Provincia de Santiago, Santiago, Chile. The tremor was recorded early morning on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022, at 5:51 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 79 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Bernardo (pop. 249,900) located 5 km from the epicenter, La Pintana (pop. 201,200) 6 km away, Puente Alto (pop. 510,400) 9 km away, Buin (pop. 55,400) 13 km away, Peñaflor (pop. 65,500) 19 km away, Santiago de Chile (pop. 4,837,300) 19 km away, Paine (pop. 32,800) 21 km away, Lo Prado (pop. 104,300) 21 km away, Talagante (pop. 51,800) 24 km away, and El Monte (pop. 23,100) 30 km away.
