Just 33 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Sullana, Provincia de Sullana, Piura, Peru. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Wednesday, November 9th, 2022, at 8:15 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 48.3 km below the surface.
The event was filed by The Seismological Observatory of the University of Brazil (OBSIS), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pitayo (pop. 110) located 4 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Brea (pop. 17,700) located 57 km from the epicenter, Querecotillo (pop. 25,400) 70 km away, Tambo Grande (pop. 30,000) 73 km away, Marcavelica (pop. 25,600) 77 km away, Sullana (pop. 160,800) 79 km away, Zarumilla (pop. 16,900) 86 km away, Chulucanas (pop. 68,800) 95 km away, and Piura (pop. 325,500) 107 km away.
