Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.5 quake hits 9 km south of Escuintla, Guatemala late at night

5.5 quake 11 Nov 10:39 pm (GMT -6)
5.5 quake 11 Nov 10:39 pm (GMT -6)
An intermediate magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported late at night near Escuintla, Municipio de Escuintla, Departamento de Escuintla, Guatemala.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday, November 11th, 2022, at 10:39 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 104 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.5.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Masagua (pop. 10,000) located 7 km from the epicenter, Escuintla (pop. 103,200) 9 km away, Palin (pop. 31,300) 23 km away, Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa (pop. 62,100) 28 km away, Petapa (pop. 141,500) 40 km away, Villa Canales (pop. 122,200) 40 km away, Villa Nueva (pop. 406,800) 40 km away, Mixco (pop. 473,100) 50 km away, and Guatemala (pop. 994,900) 55 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
