4.3 quake 20 Nov 7:40 pm (GMT -7)
A very shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported early evening near Parral, Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Sunday, November 20th, 2022, at 7:40 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 8 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Parral (pop. 104,800) located 3 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Francisco del Oro (pop. 4,200) located 17 km from the epicenter, Santa Barbara (pop. 8,800) 18 km away, Matamoros (pop. 2,600) 19 km away, Valle de Allende (pop. 4,200) 29 km away, and Pueblito de Allende (pop. 1,400) 36 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Villa Ocampo (pop. 1,100) located 55 km from the epicenter, Coronado (pop. 1,100) 55 km away, Pilar de Conchos (pop. 2,200) 61 km away, and Mariano Balleza (pop. 2,100) 66 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
