Significant 5.0 quake hits near Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos, Philippines

5.0 quake 24 Nov 11:05 pm (GMT +8)
5.0 quake 24 Nov 11:05 pm (GMT +8)
Just 16 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos, Philippines. The tremor was recorded late at night on Thursday, November 24th, 2022, at 11:05 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Piddig (pop. 3,500) located 23 km from the epicenter, Dingras (pop. 6,900) 29 km away, Bacarra (pop. 9,600) 31 km away, Laoag (pop. 102,100) 34 km away, and San Nicolas de Ilocos (pop. 34,200) 35 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Batac City (pop. 53,500) located 44 km from the epicenter, Aparri (pop. 33,200) 78 km away, Vigan (pop. 48,500) 95 km away, and Tuguegarao City (pop. 115,100) 113 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
