Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 16 km northeast of Chalcis, Greece early afternoon

4.8 quake 28 Dec 2:24 pm (GMT +2)
4.8 quake 28 Dec 2:24 pm (GMT +2)
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Chalcis, Euboea, Central Greece, Greece, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Wednesday, December 28th, 2022, at 2:24 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Makrikapa (pop. 880) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Chalcis (pop. 59,100) 16 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Thebes (pop. 22,000) located 44 km from the epicenter, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 54 km away, Marousi (pop. 72,300) 58 km away, Chalandri (pop. 74,200) 61 km away, Peristeri (pop. 140,000) 62 km away, Athens (pop. 664,000) 65 km away, Kallithea (pop. 100,600) 69 km away, and Piraeus (pop. 163,700) 70 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
