Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece

4.9 quake 7 Jan 3:52 am (GMT +2)
4.9 quake 7 Jan 3:52 am (GMT +2)
A shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Saturday, January 7th, 2023, at 3:52 am local time at a shallow depth of 17.5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pelopi (pop. 350) located 1 km from the epicenter, Stýpsi (pop. 1000) 5 km away, Mantamados (pop. 1,100) 6 km away, Molivos (pop. 1,600) 9 km away, Ayia Paraskevi (pop. 2,200) 9 km away, and Kalloni (pop. 1,800) 12 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mitilini (pop. 28,300) located 35 km from the epicenter, Ayvalik (pop. 70,000) 36 km away, and Canakkale (pop. 87,800) 92 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
