Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.1 quake hits 10 km south of Hiratsuka, Japan in the evening

5.1 quake 29 Jan 9:19 pm (GMT +9)
5.1 quake 29 Jan 9:19 pm (GMT +9)
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, Japan, was reported only 19 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 149 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Sunday, January 29th, 2023, at 9:19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ōiso (pop. 32,600) located 8 km from the epicenter, Hiratsuka (pop. 259,100) 10 km away, Chigasaki (pop. 231,700) 13 km away, Odawara (pop. 203,000) 16 km away, Hadano (pop. 174,300) 17 km away, Isehara (pop. 103,400) 18 km away, Fujisawa (pop. 394,600) 18 km away, Kamakura (pop. 166,000) 21 km away, Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 36 km away, and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 60 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
