Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.0 quake hits 47 miles northwest of Kenai, Alaska, United States early morning

5.0 quake 2 Feb 5:48 am (GMT -9)
5.0 quake 2 Feb 5:48 am (GMT -9)
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Kenai, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, USA, was reported only 27 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 62 miles beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023, at 5:48 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 4.7, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tyonek (pop. 170) located 34 miles from the epicenter, and Nikiski (pop. 4,500) 39 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kenai (pop. 7,700) located 47 miles from the epicenter, Ridgeway (pop. 2,000) 52 miles away, Kalifornsky (pop. 7,900) 54 miles away, Soldotna (pop. 4,500) 54 miles away, Cohoe (pop. 1,400) 56 miles away, Sterling (pop. 5,600) 59 miles away, and Alaska City (pop. 298,700) 75 miles away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
