Just 22 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Perudzha, Provincia di Perugia, Umbria, Italy. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Thursday, March 9th, 2023, at 8:08 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 8.3 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.6, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Umbertide (pop. 11,000) located 5 km from the epicenter, and Perudzha (pop. 120,100) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Citta di Castello (pop. 22,500) located 23 km from the epicenter, Bastia umbra (pop. 17,800) 28 km away, Foligno (pop. 47,700) 45 km away, Arezzo (pop. 76,300) 46 km away, and San Marino (pop. 4,500) 73 km away.
