A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Los Reyes de Salgado, Los Reyes, Michoacan, Mexico, was reported 31 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Wednesday, March 15th, 2023, at 8:44 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Zirosto (pop. 2,200) located 0 km from the epicenter.
In Periban (pop. 15,400) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Los Reyes de Salgado (pop. 39,200) 14 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Paracho de Verduzco (pop. 18,900) located 33 km from the epicenter, Uruapan (pop. 264,400) 34 km away, Jacona de Plancarte (pop. 56,900) 45 km away, Zamora de Hidalgo (pop. 141,600) 49 km away, and Apatzingan (pop. 99,000) 51 km away.
