4.7 quake 13 km north of Bolu, Turkey, Mar 16, 2023 1:55 pm (GMT +3)
A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Bolu, Turkey, was reported only 17 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Thursday, March 16th, 2023, at 1:55 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bolu (pop. 96,600) located 13 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Alaplı (pop. 20,900) located 43 km from the epicenter, Gerede (pop. 28,600) 47 km away, Devrek (pop. 24,600) 49 km away, Akçakoca (pop. 35,200) 51 km away, Ereğli (pop. 88,800) 52 km away, and Karasu Mahallesi (pop. 39,500) 76 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karabuk (pop. 97,500) located 92 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
