3.0 quake 16 Mar 11:11 pm (GMT +1)
The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) reported a magnitude 3.0 quake in Switzerland near Freiburg, Saanebezirk, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Thursday, March 16th, 2023, at 11:11 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rossens (pop. 49) located 3 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Villars-sur-Glâne (pop. 10,000) located 9 km from the epicenter, Bulle (pop. 12,100) 11 km away, and Freiburg (pop. 32,800) 12 km away. In Yverdon-les-Bains (pop. 23,700, 33 km away), Vevey (pop. 15,800, 33 km away), Montreux (pop. 22,900, 34 km away), Köniz (pop. 37,200, 35 km away), Berna (pop. 121,600, 39 km away), and Lausanne (pop. 139,100, 40 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
