Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes near Amaliada, Ilia Prefecture, Western Greece, Greece

4.0 quake 17 Mar 3:45 pm (GMT +2)
4.0 quake 17 Mar 3:45 pm (GMT +2)
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Amaliada, Ilia Prefecture, Western Greece, Greece, was reported 32 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 20.6 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Friday, March 17th, 2023, at 3:45 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Andravida (pop. 3,600) located 2 km from the epicenter, Traganon (pop. 2,400) 2 km away, Lechaina (pop. 3,700) 4 km away, Kavasila (pop. 1,600) 4 km away, Gastouni (pop. 8,100) 7 km away, Vartholomio (pop. 3,100) 9 km away, and Amaliada (pop. 16,800) 13 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pyrgos (pop. 22,400) located 29 km from the epicenter, and Patras (pop. 168,000) 54 km away.
