4.6 quake 18 Mar 4:31 am (GMT +13)
4.6 quake 18 Mar 4:31 am (GMT +13)
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Whakatane, Whakatane District, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, was reported only 17 minutes ago by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, March 18th, 2023, at 4:31 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kawerau (pop. 6,700) located 4 km from the epicenter.
In Edgecumbe (pop. 1,800) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Awakeri (pop. 2,300) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Whakatane (pop. 18,600) located 28 km from the epicenter, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 40 km away, Ngongotaha (pop. 5,200) 44 km away, and Tauranga (pop. 110,300) 62 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Taupo (pop. 22,500) located 87 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
