Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 28 km southwest of Whakatane, New Zealand

4.8 quake 18 Mar 4:46 am (GMT +13)
4.8 quake 18 Mar 4:46 am (GMT +13)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 29 minutes ago 28 km southwest of Whakatane, New Zealand, New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.6 km beneath the epicenter near Whakatane, Whakatane District, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, early morning on Saturday, March 18th, 2023, at 4:46 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 5.3, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.3, the United States Geological Survey at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kawerau (pop. 6,700) located 4 km from the epicenter.
In Edgecumbe (pop. 1,800) located 15 km from the epicenter, Awakeri (pop. 2,300) 20 km away, and Whakatane (pop. 18,600) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rotorua (pop. 65,900) located 40 km from the epicenter, Ngongotaha (pop. 5,200) 43 km away, Tauranga (pop. 110,300) 62 km away, and Taupo (pop. 22,500) 87 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
