4.7 quake 18 Mar 8:58 am (GMT +13)
4.7 quake 18 Mar 8:58 am (GMT +13)
A very shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported in the morning near Whakatane, Whakatane District, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
According to New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the quake hit on Saturday, March 18th, 2023, at 8:58 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kawerau (pop. 6,700) located 5 km from the epicenter.
In Edgecumbe (pop. 1,800) located 14 km from the epicenter, and Awakeri (pop. 2,300) 18 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Whakatane (pop. 18,600) located 27 km from the epicenter, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 41 km away, Ngongotaha (pop. 5,200) 44 km away, and Tauranga (pop. 110,300) 62 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Taupo (pop. 22,500) located 88 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
