Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.1 quake hits 36 km southeast of Taloqan, Afghanistan early morning

5.1 quake 18 Mar 4:30 am (GMT +4:30)
5.1 quake 18 Mar 4:30 am (GMT +4:30)
An intermediate magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported early morning near Taloqan, Tāluqān, Takhar, Afghanistan.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Saturday, March 18th, 2023, at 4:00 am local time at an intermediate depth of 149 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Farkhār (pop. 10,500) located 8 km from the epicenter, Taloqan (pop. 64,300) 36 km away, Rustāq (pop. 25,600) 56 km away, Ārt Khwājah (pop. 18,600) 64 km away, Khanabad (pop. 71,500) 71 km away, Faizabad (pop. 44,400) 81 km away, Nahrin (pop. 22,400) 94 km away, Kunduz (pop. 161,900) 95 km away, and Baghlan (pop. 108,400) 121 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
