Significant magnitude 5.1 earthquake 43 km northeast of Gorgan, Iran

5.1 quake 22 Mar 2:08 pm (GMT +3:30)
5.1 quake 22 Mar 2:08 pm (GMT +3:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred around noon on Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023, at 1:38 pm local time near Gorgan, Golestan, Iran, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 5.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Āq Qāyeh (pop. 5,100) located 42 km from the epicenter, Gonbad-e Kāvūs (pop. 131,400) 42 km away, Āzādshahr (pop. 47,600) 42 km away, and Gorgan (pop. 244,900) 43 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kalāleh (pop. 33,700) located 73 km from the epicenter, Shahrud (pop. 131,900) 87 km away, and Behshahr (pop. 93,500) 115 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
