Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

5.1 quake 23 Mar 4:23 am (GMT +8)
5.1 quake 23 Mar 4:23 am (GMT +8)
Indonesia was shaken near Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 24 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 110.2 km beneath the epicenter near Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, early morning on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023, at 4:23 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Maumere (pop. 47,600) located 106 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
