Magnitude 4.6 earthquake strikes near Korçë, Rrethi i Korçës, Qarku i Korçës, Albania

4.6 quake 23 Mar 2:43 am (GMT +1)
4.6 quake 23 Mar 2:43 am (GMT +1)
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Korçë, Rrethi i Korçës, Qarku i Korçës, Albania, was reported only 26 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023, at 2:43 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.7, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.4, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Colonia (pop. 7,900) located 16 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Korçë (pop. 58,300) located 29 km from the epicenter, and Pogradec (pop. 61,500) 53 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Patos (pop. 60,000) located 83 km from the epicenter, Elbasan (pop. 100,900) 85 km away, Fier (pop. 56,300) 89 km away, Vlorë (pop. 89,500) 90 km away, and Lushnje (pop. 41,500) 91 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
