4.7 quake 24 Mar 4:25 pm (GMT +9)
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Japan near Mito, Mito-shi, Ibaraki, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Friday, March 24th, 2023, at 4:25 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 80 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kasama (pop. 29,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, Tomobe (pop. 37,100) 6 km away, Mito (pop. 246,500) 15 km away, Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 21 km away, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,800) 21 km away, and Mooka (pop. 65,700) 26 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) located 29 km from the epicenter, Hitachi (pop. 186,300) 38 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 96 km away, and Kawasaki (pop. 1,306,800) 111 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
