Southern California is one of the country's seismically most active areas. Many larger and smaller faults crisscross the region and cause frequent smaller and occasionally larger earthquakes.
The reason there are so many active faults is the side-wise movement along the San Andreas and its associated faults systems that separate the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.
