Earthquakes and Volcanoes

Earthquakes often precede volcano eruptions, sometimes only by hours and other times by several months.
While most seismic activity related to volcanoes is not necessarily followed by an eruption, almost all eruptions are preceded or accompanied by earthquake activity at shallow depths in the vicinity of the volcano. In this respect, recording earthquakes near active and dormant volcanoes represents an important tool in monitoring volcanoes and predicting eruptions.
Here's a list of recently recorded earthquakes that have occurred within 25 km radius of a volcano at depths less than 50 km. VolcanoDiscovery has almost complete cover of all such quakes for volcanoes in Europe and North America. For most other regions, international seismological agencies typically provide earthquake data for quakes over magnitude 3 or 4. Larger quakes near volcanoes are, however, well documented.
