Ash plume from Ebeko on 9 Mar 2017 (image: L. Kotenko, IVS FEB RAS, KVERT)The volcano continues to erupt sporadically. A new phase of ash emissions from the summit crater of the volcano was observed on 9 March 2017.
It is unclear whether the current phase of intermittent mild explosive activity involves fresh magma at the surface or are only steam-driven (phreatic), caused by interaction of circulating fluids (mainly water) with an underlying hot body of magma. However, the absence of intense heat sources at the surface as would be expected if fresh lava was erupted favors the latter interpretation.
