Background

Lonquimay volcano is dominantly andesitic, but contains also basaltic and dacitic rocks. Eruptions have occurred from both the summit crater and flank vents. A weakly defined fissure zone is aligned E-W.
A prominent NE-SW fissure cuts across the entire volcano and is known as the Cordón Fissural Oriental fissure zone. It extends 10 km to the NE has erupted from several flank vents and formed cinder cones. Some of these have erupted large lava flows in historical time, such as during 1887-90 and 1988-90. These flows traveled up to 10 km from their flank vents.
