Light 4.4 quake hits near Abra Pampa, Argentina

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Abra Pampa, Departamento de Cochinoca, Jujuy, Argentina, was reported only 11 minutes ago by INPRES, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 269 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday 26 December 2020 at 1:37 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Abra Pampa (pop. 9,400, 61 km away), La Quiaca (pop. 14,800, 90 km away), El Aguilar (pop. 3,700, 91 km away), and Villazon (pop. 30,300, 91 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
