Light 4.6 quake hits near Elbasan, Qarku i Elbasanit, Albania

4.6 quake 29 km southeast of Elbasan, Albania, 20 Jan 2021 3:39 am (GMT +1)
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Gramsh (pop. 11,600) located 15 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Pogradec (pop. 61,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Elbasan (pop. 100,900) 29 km away, Kuçovë (pop. 18,200) 39 km away, Berat (pop. 46,900) 42 km away, Korçë (pop. 58,300) 52 km away, Lushnjë (pop. 41,500) 53 km away, Tirana (pop. 374,800) 61 km away, and Patos (pop. 60,000) 67 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Durrës (pop. 122,000) located 86 km from the epicenter.
