4.4 quake 10 Mar 8:50 pm (GMT +8)
According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Wednesday 10 March 2021 at 8:50 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tomohon (pop. 27,600) located 45 km from the epicenter, and Tondano (pop. 33,300) 55 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Manado (pop. 451,900) located 61 km from the epicenter, Laikit, Laikit II (Dimembe) (pop. 8,000) 71 km away, and Bitung (pop. 137,400) 90 km away.
