An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 10 minutes ago 44 miles northeast of Hilo, Hawaii, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
3.1 quake 12 Mar 5:31 pm (GMT -10)
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 9.8 miles beneath the epicenter near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, in the afternoon on Friday 12 March 2021 at 5:31 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Honomu (pop. 510, 38 miles away), Pepeekeo (pop. 1,800, 40 miles away), Pepeekeo (pop. 1,800, 40 miles away), Hilo (pop. 43,300, 44 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 47 miles away), and Kea'au (pop. 2,300, 48 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
