An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 8 minutes ago 41 km northwest of Te Anau, New Zealand, New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported.
4.3 quake 14 Mar 10:04 am (GMT +13)
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 71 km beneath the epicenter near Te Anau, Southland District, Southland, New Zealand, in the morning on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 10:04 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Te Anau (pop. 2,100) located 41 km from the epicenter, Queenstown (pop. 10,400) 91 km away, and Kingston (pop. 2,500) 99 km away.
