An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 occurred only 8 minutes ago 6 miles east of Gilroy, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.8 miles beneath the epicenter near Gilroy, Santa Clara County, California, USA, in the afternoon on Wednesday 24 March 2021 at 4:07 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gilroy (pop. 53,200) located 6 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hollister (pop. 37,500) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Morgan Hill (pop. 42,900) 14 miles away, Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 17 miles away, Prunedale (pop. 17,600) 19 miles away, and Salinas (pop. 157,400) 25 miles away. In Santa Cruz (pop. 64,200, 31 miles away), San Jose (pop. 1,026,900, 33 miles away), and Santa Clara (pop. 126,200, 36 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
