Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Tacna, Provincia de Tacna, Peru

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kallapuma (pop. 62) located 12 km from the epicenter, and Chuquitira (pop. 4,200) 25 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chipispaya (pop. 1,900) located 44 km from the epicenter, Quilahuani (pop. 3,200) 46 km away, Ilabaya (pop. 9,500) 73 km away, and Tacna (pop. 280,100) 84 km away.
