A very shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 9:38 am local time at a very shallow depth of 4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Fern Acres (pop. 1,500) 16 miles away, Mountain View (pop. 3,900) 18 miles away, Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700) 19 miles away, and Pāhala (pop. 1,400) 19 miles away.
