Moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake 23 km southwest of Jalalabad, Afghanistan

India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Afghanistan near Jalalabad, Jalālābād, Nangarhar, only 17 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday 16 June 2021 at 1:52 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 30 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jalalabad (pop. 200,300) located 23 km from the epicenter, and Markaz-e Woluswalī-ye Āchīn (pop. 15,100) 44 km away.
