The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 88 km beneath the epicenter near Gorontalo, Indonesia, early evening on Sunday 18 July 2021 at 6:40 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gorontalo (pop. 144,200) located 102 km from the epicenter.
