An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early evening on Wednesday, September 15th, 2021, at 6:47 pm local time near Panalanoy, Leyte, Eastern Visayas, Philippines, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 31 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Balangkayan (pop. 3,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Llorente (pop. 7,900) 21 km away, and Borongan City (pop. 16,500) 26 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Panalanoy (pop. 189,100) located 41 km from the epicenter, Tacloban City (pop. 242,100) 41 km away, Palo (pop. 17,500) 47 km away, Tanauan (pop. 16,600) 48 km away, Catbalogan (pop. 68,100) 66 km away, and Ormoc City (pop. 191,200) 92 km away.
