5.0 quake 21 Jul 12:23 pm (GMT -4)
An intermediate magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported around noon near Calama, Provincia de El Loa, Antofagasta, Chile.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday 21 July 2021 at 12:23 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 101 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Calama (pop. 143,100) located 96 km from the epicenter.
