An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred only 6 minutes ago 18 miles southeast of Ukiah, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 0.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Ukiah, Mendocino County, California, USA, around noon on Friday, October 15th, 2021, at 12:54 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hopland (pop. 760) located 5 miles from the epicenter, and Cloverdale (pop. 8,800) 9 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kelseyville (pop. 3,400) located 11 miles from the epicenter, Ukiah (pop. 15,900) 18 miles away, Clearlake (pop. 15,200) 22 miles away, Russian River (pop. 11,700) 24 miles away, Russian River (pop. 11,700) 24 miles away, and Windsor (pop. 27,500) 29 miles away. In Santa Rosa (pop. 175,000, 38 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
