Moderate 4.8 quake hits near Jeremie, Jeremi, Grandans, Haiti4.8 quake 8 Apr 1:32 pm (GMT -4)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 18 minutes ago 10 km northeast of Jeremie, Haiti, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Jeremie, Jeremi, Grandans, Haiti, around noon on Friday, April 8th, 2022, at 1:32 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Jeremie (pop. 97,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Moron (pop. 1,800) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Abricots (pop. 1,200) located 30 km from the epicenter, Dame-Marie (pop. 6,000) 44 km away, Baradères (pop. 1,700) 45 km away, Les Anglais (pop. 8,200) 46 km away, Chardonnière (pop. 3,900) 47 km away, and Port-a-Piment (pop. 3,800) 47 km away.
