4.3 quake 1 May 4:33 am (GMT +3)
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Greece near Patitiri, Magnesia, Thessaly, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Sunday, May 1st, 2022, at 4:33 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.1, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.1, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gerakas (pop. 62) located 31 km from the epicenter, and Patitiri (pop. 1,600) 46 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Skopelos (pop. 2,900) located 54 km from the epicenter, Sykia (pop. 1,900) 59 km away, Sarti (pop. 1,200) 65 km away, Skiathos (pop. 5,200) 65 km away, Pefkochori (pop. 1,900) 66 km away, Neos Marmaras (pop. 3,200) 69 km away, and Kassandria (pop. 2,800) 82 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
