Significant magnitude 5.6 earthquake 116 km southwest of Bandar Lampung, Indonesia

5.6 quake 31 May 2:10 pm (GMT +7)
5.6 quake 31 May 2:10 pm (GMT +7)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.6 quake in Indonesia near Bandar Lampung, Lampung, only 23 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Tuesday, May 31st, 2022, at 2:10 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 70.6 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.5, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bandar Lampung (pop. 800,300) located 116 km from the epicenter, Kotabumi (pop. 42,400) 134 km away, and Metro (pop. 149,500) 139 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
