Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.2 just reported 17 km south of Tokushima, Japan

5.2 quake 17 km south of Tokushima, Japan, Jun 17, 2022 12:51 am (GMT +9)
5.2 quake 17 km south of Tokushima, Japan, Jun 17, 2022 12:51 am (GMT +9)
Japan was shaken near Tokushima, Tokushima Shi, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 only 12 minutes ago, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 44.5 km beneath the epicenter near Tokushima, Tokushima Shi, Japan, after midnight on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at 12:51 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Anan (pop. 55,400) located 6 km from the epicenter, Komatsushimachō (pop. 42,600) 10 km away, Tokushima (pop. 267,300) 17 km away, and Ishii (pop. 26,400) 22 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kamojimachō-jōgejima (pop. 24,400) located 28 km from the epicenter, Narutochō-mitsuishi (pop. 64,100) 32 km away, Wakimachi (pop. 17,700) 44 km away, Minato (pop. 375,300) 62 km away, and Osaka (pop. 2,592,400) 121 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
