A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, was reported only 9 minutes ago by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 96.6 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Monday, July 4th, 2022, at 3:27 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gilgit (pop. 10,400) located 19 km from the epicenter, Gahkuch (pop. 10,000) 46 km away, and Barishal (pop. 2,000) 73 km away.
