Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 3 km southwest of Takarazuka, Japan

4.2 quake 24 Sep 3:33 am (GMT +9)
4.2 quake 24 Sep 3:33 am (GMT +9)
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Takarazuka, Takarazuka Shi, Hyōgo, Japan, was reported only 20 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10.7 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, September 24th, 2022, at 3:33 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Takarazuka (pop. 219,800) located 3 km from the epicenter, Ashiya (pop. 88,600) 7 km away, Itami (pop. 193,500) 7 km away, and Nishinomiya (pop. 468,900) 8 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kawanishi (pop. 160,500) located 9 km from the epicenter, Amagasaki (pop. 442,200) 12 km away, Sandachō (pop. 132,900) 14 km away, Kobe (pop. 1,528,500) 17 km away, and Osaka (pop. 2,592,400) 20 km away.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
