Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes near Wellington, Wellington City, New Zealand

4.0 quake 19 Nov 10:32 pm (GMT +13)
4.0 quake 19 Nov 10:32 pm (GMT +13)
Just 24 minutes ago, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Wellington, Wellington City, New Zealand. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday, November 19th, 2022, at 10:32 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 22.2 km below the surface.
The event was filed by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Carterton (pop. 10,100) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Masterton (pop. 28,200) 19 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Upper Hutt (pop. 38,400) located 35 km from the epicenter, Paraparaumu (pop. 30,600) 39 km away, Levin (pop. 19,800) 47 km away, Lower Hutt (pop. 101,200) 49 km away, Wainuiomata (pop. 19,400) 49 km away, Porirua (pop. 50,900) 51 km away, Wellington (pop. 381,900) 63 km away, and Karori (pop. 15,700) 65 km away.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.

Paekākāriki / Light shaking (MMI IV) / rattling, vibrating / 5-10 s : Well, I'm so used to earthquakes, so when we have very tiny ones I just think it's my imagination. But this one clearly moved/vibration of water in my water-bottle and my mirror moved against the wall a bit. My worst fear would be a tidal wave since I live on a hill with a good view of the ocean and can see on a regular night waves crashing against the seawall here in peakakariki. | 3 users found this interesting.
Paraparaumu / Light shaking (MMI IV) / both vertical and horizontal swinging / 5-10 s : Light shaking | One user found this interesting.
Paraparaumu beach / Light shaking (MMI IV) / single lateral shake / 2-5 s : A biggish shake but not sharp and gently ebbed away | One user found this interesting.
Lower hutt (47.2 km WSW of epicenter) [Map] / Very weak shaking (MMI II) / vertical swinging (up and down) / 1-2 s
Upper Hutt / Light shaking (MMI IV) / single vertical bump / 15-20 s
Wellington / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / vibration and rolling / 2-5 s
Waikanae Beach / Weak shaking (MMI III) / horizontal (sideways) swinging / very short : Waikanae...heard it coming then little wobble
Wellington / Light shaking (MMI IV) / 5-10 s
Plimmerton, Porirua / Weak shaking (MMI III) / rattling, vibrating / 1-2 s (reported through our app)
AKATARAWA VALLEY UPPER HUTT / Very weak shaking (MMI II) / very short
