Significant magnitude 5.1 earthquake 119 km southeast of China, Japan

5.1 quake 30 Nov 12:57 am (GMT +9)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 15 minutes ago 119 km southeast of China, Japan, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near China, Ōshima-gun, Kagoshima, Japan, after midnight on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, at 12:57 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in China (pop. 6,000) located 119 km from the epicenter, and Naga (pop. 59,600) 124 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either
online or via
our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

If you felt this quake (or if you were near the epicenter),
please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! Other users would love to hear about it!
If you did NOT feel the quake although you were in the area,
please report it! Your contribution is valuable to earthquake science, seismic hazard analysis and mitigation efforts. You can use your device location or the map to indicate where you were during the earthquake. Thank you!
Aftershocks
[Περισσότερες πληροφορίες]
Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake ruptured along a surface of approx. 13 km
2 (=5 sqare miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 6 km (4 mi).
Aftershocks typically occur during the days and weeks following the quake at or near the same fault, at distances of up to approx. two times the length of the rupture zone.
The often broadly linear arrangement of aftershock epicenters encompasses the rupture zone of the main shock (check on the
map below to verify).
